The US Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) has finished the first flight of an artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) piloted XQ-58A Valkyrie jet drone at the Eglin Test and Training Complex in Florida. The three-hour sortie supports the air force’s ongoing Skyborg Vanguard and Autonomous Aircraft Experimentation programs seeking next-generation autonomous aircraft for operations in contested environments. “The mission proved out a multi-layer safety framework on an AI/ML-flown uncrewed aircraft and demonstrated an AI/ML agent solving a tactically relevant “challenge problem” during airborne operations,” AI Test and Operations Chief Col. Tucker Hamilton stated.
Travis Air Force Base has received its first KC-46A Pegasus refueler aircraft after Boeing halted deliveries in February due to quality concerns. Flaws were found in the forward pressure bulkhead that could have affected the tanker’s fuel system. In March, the US Federal Aviation Administration completed an investigation and allowed the company to resume distribution.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Navy has unveiled new surface vessels with missiles that can hit targets up to 600 kilometers (372 miles) away, according to a report by Tasnim news agency. According to budget filings and procurement documents uncovered by ABC, the US is set to invest approximately $630 million in northern Australia over the next two to three years. The most notable aspect of this investment is the construction of a state-of-the-art “mission planning” and operations center in Darwin. This development sheds light on the region’s growing importance for the US military and its implications for the US-Australia defense partnership.
Indian media reports that the Indian army has decided to purchase 97 “made in India” drones for a total price of more than $1.2 billion, for surveillance purposes along the tense borders with China and Pakistan. A spokesman for the Indian government said that “recently, an in-depth study was conducted by all branches of the military and it was decided that in order to meet the Medium Altitudes and long Endurance requirements, the Indian armed forces will purchase 97 such drones for monitoring and patrolling over the sea and land borders.”
